Choosing Cement and Steel for Your House: A Practical Guide

Which cement and steel are best for house construction in Bangalore? OPC vs PPC, TMT bar grades, ISI marks and the checks that matter more than the brand.

TMT steel reinforcement being placed for a concrete slab

“Which cement brand is best?” is a question we hear on almost every site visit. After 28 years, our answer is that the grade, freshness and handling of materials matter as much as the name on the bag. Here is what to look for.

Cement: OPC or PPC?

  • OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement), 53 grade gains strength quickly and is often used for structural concrete such as columns and slabs.
  • PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement) gains strength more slowly but develops good long-term durability and generates less heat, which suits plastering and masonry, and many structural uses too.

Many houses use both: the structural engineer specifies which goes where.

Cement checks that matter

  • BIS (ISI) mark and grade printed on the bag
  • Manufacturing date — cement loses strength with age; fresher is better
  • Storage — off the ground, away from walls, covered from moisture, and used in the order it arrived
  • No lumps — hardened lumps mean moisture has already got in

Steel: TMT bars

Reinforcement today is TMT (thermo-mechanically treated) steel, in grades such as Fe 500, Fe 500D and Fe 550D. The “D” grades offer better ductility — the ability to bend without snapping — which helps a structure absorb stress. Your structural design decides the grade and bar sizes.

Steel checks that matter

  • BIS certification and the manufacturer’s markings rolled onto the bar
  • Correct diameters as per the structural drawing
  • No heavy rust or pitting (light surface rust is normal)
  • Proper storage off the ground

Placement matters as much as purchase

The best steel performs poorly if bars are spaced wrongly, lapped too short or left without cover. The best cement fails if the mix is wrong or curing is skipped. That is why we check reinforcement and concrete at every stage before it is covered up.

Brands we typically use

We usually specify established brands such as UltraTech cement and JSW steel, chosen for consistent quality and availability. Your itemised estimate lists every brand, so there is no guesswork.
